POPULATION
The growth of world population and production combined with unsustainable consumption patterns places increasingly severe stress on the life-supporting capacities of our planet. The world population is currently estimated to be 6 billion. Pressure on the global environment occurs from rapid population growth. The New Zealand population has increased by half-a-million in the last 20 years. Increasing population adds demands for energy and natural resources and results in pressure to clear natural areas near towns and cities. Political Parties should commit to:
1. Developing a population policy aimed at stabilising New Zealand's population by 2010. 2. Integrating immigration policy with the population policy goal.
3. Promoting policies agreed at the UN Cairo Population summit of 1994 to stabilise population internationally.
