Eco-Village at the Northern Boundary
of Metropolitan Auckland—

Hello friends –

To those of you, or other people you may know, who are interested in taking part in constructing an Eco-Village – with a lot of the physical “infrastructure” already in place – here’s a great challenge and a real opportunity.

A new Charitable Trust is planned to take control of the former Centrepoint Community at Albany early next year. About 30 ( of the total 72 ) acres, including a variety of buildings, housing accommodations, workshop spaces, a ‘preschool building’ and other facilities will be made available to a core group of people who are prepared to re-construct a healthy new intentional community [Eco-Village] – basing themselves on humane, non-violent, sustainable and ecological principles.

Although nothing is “finalised” yet, the process of restructuring the old Centrepoint Community Growth Trust is is now in its final stages – the current proposal has the new Trust renamed “The NZ Communities Growth Trust” and administered by the Public Trust Office.

Its main “Objectives” (purposes) will be to help set up “co-operative residential communities” and to provide ongoing support for them.. The new scheme specifically refers to a community ethos based on – I quote directly from the document – “co-operation, tolerance, love for and respect of their members”, and – “ a quality of life that is not exploitative of the environment or people and that is permanent, healthy and sustainable for future generations.”

Our group (now legally incorporating as the ‘New Community Society of NZ Inc.’ – and very much looking for/in need of! a new name for the community/Eco-Village here] have already organised a proposal to form a new community at the Albany site. That group is composed of some Centrepoint members and long-term residents who have been living at the Albany site for various periods of time, but none of whom are “Bert-Potter-devotees”.

We’ve worked out most of the basic legal documentation required for when the PublicTrust [the new “trustee” of the NZCGT] will be ready to make the necessary contractual agreement to ‘lease’ the land and buildings on the ‘lower 30 acres’ to the new community here. That will probably happen ‘formally/legally’ sometime in the first part of next year (2000).

There are only about 15 in that group at present, and we’ll need more people to help start up the new community here. We particularly need skilled mature people at this ‘pioneering’ time, who can bring their expertise and constructive energies of all kinds to utilise the considerable infrastructure already here and establish new businesses and ventures. So, if ecological intentional community and co-housing is what you’ve been looking for – by all means get in touch with us !

With love and bright blessings to all of you !

PS Note that this is my personal view and letter – I am not at this time a ‘spokesperson’ for the new community group members or other residents here.

Latest Issue (No 13) "Chip'N'Away"—
"Chip'N'Away" - a newsletter about making intentional community in Aotearoa - is published by Heartwood Community Inc. an umbrella group for three communities in Christchurch established in 1971. Our focus is community living, governance and relationships, and we post out to about thirty five communities in existence or formation stage around NZ and to interested individuals. We network only with groups that practice non-violence, have a shared governance of equals and respect the rights of individuals. This includes eco-village formation groups but also many older alternative communities. This is a paper format publication so if you would like to go on our mailing list you need to e-mail a postal address. We ask a small donation ($5+) of individuals not members or past residents. The latest 12 page issue (November 99) includes an updates of Heartwood affairs, articles from Valley Farm Ecovillage;Beachcomber;Waitakere Eco-Neighbourhood;the CoHouse and "After the revolution..." a 3 page "millennium special", one persons retrospect on changes in communal living attitudes during the last thirty years, in general and as it has affected the community he lives in.

We’re Almost There....—
Beachcomber Community is a small urban community establishing itself on the site of an old motel, in Christchurch, New Zealand. We have been meeting intensively since February, creating our constitution, and organizing a legal and financial structure that meets our vision.

At present we are looking for a loan of approximately $50,000. We have been crunching figures for a few months now and believe we can offer any creditor a solid and reliable reliable repayment scheme. We are open to any offers and suggestions. We have had assistance already from older, more established communities, who remember what a daunting yet exciting task it is to create something different.

If you would like more information or simply to get in touch, that would be great. It is always a treat to contact other likeminded people, wherever you are in the world.

Beachcomber Community is also looking for information on flat owning companies. The FOC structure seems to be the one that will suit us best. We would love to hear from anyone with experience or contacts in this area.

Thank you,

Briar Cook, on behalf of Beachcomber Community

Ecovillage Resident Shareholders Wanted—
Valley Farm Ecovillage is a 400 acre property in the southern Coromandel Ranges. We are at the early stages of developing this valley into an ecovillage aiming for a resident population of around 12 households.
Two households secured the property in December 1998, and we are seeking others to help realize this project.
A shareholder will have assistance in building, access to building materials, a share in the co-operatively run on-site cottage industries and a range of employment options on-site, as part of their shareholding.
The valley is 120 acres pasture, flat to gentle rolling and hilly, and 280 acres of well established bush, indecernably blending into Department of Conservation forest on three sides. A good sized stream runs through the property with smaller streams feeding into it.

Sustainable Development Handbook, Eco-Villages—
In response to a perceived demand for lifestyle properties which have components of sustainability and environmental responsibility Lattey Consultants Ltd is embarking on a research project to write a nationally applicable handbook for Eco-Village developments. We have been fortunate enough to receive some financial backing from the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and the Tindall Foundation. We are currently negotiating with other sources of funding.

The target audience for the handbook is that of both professionals such as developers, surveyors, planners, engineers, territorial local authorities and the general public at large. The aim of the project is to produce a handbook that sets out some voluntary standards for the implementation of systems such as sustainable on-site waste treatment, water supply and power generation within subdivisions, and to obtain local authority approval to these standards. The handbook will also address standards relating to subdivision design and layout that will enable the sustainable technologies to function in a communal situation along with general design standards for community wellbeing.

In order for us to proceed further with our project we are interested in gauging the reaction and support of professional bodies, interest groups and the general public. If you would like us to send you a summary of our proposal please contact us. If you believe that there is a need for a handbook setting out national standards for alternative technologies and subdivision layout we would greatly appreciate an indication of your support. Such a letter would be used to demonstrate support for the project to potential funding agencies.

Should you wish to formally show your support for this project please return written confirmation of this to PO Box 370 Waikanae by 26 July 1999 or email lcl@clear.net.nz . If you have any queries about our project please contact our office. Thankyou for you cooperation.

Christchurch/ Otautahi Eco-Village—
This is to announce the existance to the world of the Christchurch/Otautahi Ecovillage Development Group. A fancy name for a group of about 10 core members and 25 interested parties, who are looking to establish an Ecovillage somewhere in or around Christchurch.

We are still in the very important stage of putting our Vision together, and just beginning to develop as a group. We are off to Tui Community for a few days soon to refine that Vision, learn how they have been so successful (15 years) and dig some veges!.

If you are interested in joining, talking, co-ordinating, sharing, or whatever, do not hesitate to make contact. If you wish to offer your skills on a professional basis, lets discuss.

We are possibly looking for development partners:So don't be shy.
