Southland Forest and Bird

We are a group of local people interested in conserving and improving the natural environment in Southland. Many of us are involved in practical projects around the region.

Our main activities are:

• management of the Te Rere yellow-eyed penguin reserve in the Catlins
• helping to manage Tautuku Lodge and tracks in the 550 ha Lenz native bush reserve
• monthly programme of trips and talks

All members receive the national (full-colour) 'Forest & Bird' magazine as well as our local branch newsletter, but you don't have to be a member to join in on any of our activities.

What is Forest and Bird ?

Forest and Bird is a national voluntary organisation and registered charity. It is New Zealand's largest environmental organisation, of which we are the Southland Branch.

Forest and Bird is helping to:

• protect natural areas including forests, tussocks, wetlands and rivers
• preserve threatened species such as native mistletoes, kakapo, kiwi and the yellow-eyed penguin
• save dolphins, seals and sea birds by ending damaging fishing practices
• promote a safe environment free from pollution
