Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-86

Dear Mr Minoru Makihara,
I am deeply concerned about the fate of our rainforests and the forest people who have traditionally relied upon them for their livelihood. I understand that rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate and that your company is involved in this destruction through logging and the trade in tropical timber. I also understand that you may be reviewing your policies in this area and I want to urge you to make significant changes.

Since the Mitsubishi corporate family is one of the largest groups of its type in the world, it is in a unique position to set a new standard for corporate responsibility in the global market place. Please do the following:

I believe that rainforests are too valuable to be used for timber. They can provide ten times the value when used for wildlife habitat, agroforestry, ecotourism, medicines, and non-forest timber products. Furthermore, these forests are often the homes of indigenous cultures who rely upon them for survival. As a leading importer and consumer of timber, you have a resposibility to provide ecologically sound leadership for other corporations. I assure you that the long-term benefits from being regarded as a truly green company will far outweigh the short-term profits derived from rainforest logging.

Please let me know of the actions you intend to take in the areas mentioned above.

Yours faithfully,
