  • Messages of Solidarity to the Fiji Vigil The Daily Peace Vigil resumes at the Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral at 2-30pm this afternoon. The vigil meets daily at the Holy trinity Anglican Cathedral: Monday - Saturday 12noon to 2pm; Sunday 2-30 to 4-30pm. Since the weekend of May 20 many women and men from a wide variety of organisations have come together every day from 12 noon to 2pm at the Anglican cathedral in the centre of Suva in protest against the violent hostage situation at parliament house. They come together for reflection, prayer and a silent vigil. Fiji women’s organisations have taken this important initiative. You can send messages of solidarity and support to the daily vigil, the messages can be sent via the Fiji Women's Rights Movement fwrm@is.com.fj or the National Council of Women ncwf@is.com.fj.

  • 31 August - registrations close for the fifth meeting of the Asia-Pacific Military Operations Research Symposium (AMORS) which will be held in Wellington from 7 to 9 November.   • FRI, 11 August - 10 am - at the gates to Government House, Basin Reserve, Wellington. Mike Moore, director general of the WTO and former PM, is receiving the Order of NZ tomorrow at 10-30am at Government house. Like people around the world who are opposing the WTO, we will be protesting outside Government House to voice our opposition to free trade at the expense of the environment and workers' rights. The WTO is an undemocratic organisation, and as director general Mike Moore is responsible for it's policies that increase the power of the even more undemocratic multinational corporations. The strength of protests against the WTO in Seattle and elsewhere has been the diversity of groups who have been able to work together. In this tradition the demonstration will include unionists and workers, students, environmentalists, socialists, anarchists, and you! Bring banners, placards, noise makers etc.

  • WEDS, 9 August - ‘Still Being Punished’ - Rachael Selby discussing the issues she encountered in interviewing Maori men and women who were punished at school for speaking Maori language from the 1930s to the 1960s, the impact on their lives, their children's lives and their grandchildren's lives; and ‘Nga Tangata Awarua: The joys and pain of being both Maori and Pakeha’ Am I Maori, Pakeha, or is it OK to be both? This oral history project undertaken by free-lance writer/researcher Heeni Collins which highlights some issues on the subject of being both Maori and Pakeha by collecting a range of life stories. 12-10pm,National Library Auditorium, Aitken St, organised by NOHANZ (the National Oral History Association) and the Oral History Centre of the Alexander Turnbull Library.

TAKAKA

  • FRI, 4 August - Hiroshima Day stall in Commercial St from 10 am to 4pm, organised by Golden Bay Peace Group. During the week 31 July to 4 August, GBPG are encouraging people to sign the Unesco Manifesto 2000. Baylink Communications (between Kirks and Hammer Hardware in Commercial St) will have the website accessible free during business hours. Golden Bay High School will have Internet access open to the public in the Art room between 3-15pm and 5pm each day. Collingwood Area School will also provide access to the website for the public - details from the school tel (03) 524 8125.

    People can sign paper copies at the stall on 4 August and we will send them in electronically. Manifesto 2000 is a 6-point pledge of personal commitment to peace, justice and environmental responsibility. It is part of Unesco's promotion of the International Year for the Culture of Peace.
