Abolition 2000 Aotearoa New Zealand

Abolition 2000 Aotearoa New Zealand was part of the Abolition 2000 global network until 2011, when peace and disarmament groups in Aotearoa New Zealand came together to form iCAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) Aotearoa New Zealand to focus on a treaty banning nuclear weapons.

Brief history of Abolition 2000 Aotearoa New Zealand

Abolition 2000 Aotearoa New Zealand was a coalition of organisations including: Aotearoa Lawyers for Peace, Dosarmament and Security Centre, Engineers for Social Responsibility, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War NZ, Pax Christi Aotearoa New Zealand, Peace Foundation, Peace Movement Aotearoa, United Nations Association of New Zealand, Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms, and WILPF Aotearoa.

Although Abolition 2000 Aotearoa New Zealand was originally a national group with local groups in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, for the last few years before it shut down the Auckland group was the only one continuing to meet regularly. The Auckland group was then the nucleus of the national group, with members in other centres joining in by phone or skype.

The Auckland group was convened by Joan Macdonald, it met once a month, with a quorum of participating groups operating for national group meetings, and circulated minutes to all groups who were interested.
