Solidarity with indigenous Australian communities
on 14 July 2007

What started out in Australia as a National Day of Action for Aboriginal Justice - focused on the ongoing crisis of Aboriginal deaths in custody and the federal government's invasion of the Northern Territory - has become an international day of solidarity, with rallies and marches planned around the world on Saturday, 14 July.

Below are details of four solidarity events in Aotearoa New Zealand on 14 July - in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Articles about the invasion of indigenous Australian communities are available here, and an ImagineNative Action poster, with details for Otepoti / Dunedin, Te Upoko o te Ika / Wellington, and Tamaki Makaurau / Auckland, is available here.

  • Auckland - 11am to 12pm, rally and march from Britomart Transport Centre to Australian Consulate
  • Stop the invasion of aboriginal communities, rally and march in solidarity with the indigenous peoples of Australia's Northern Territory! We aim to: send a loud and clear message of solidarity to the indigenous peoples suffering from Howard's racist attacks on human rights, and raise awareness of issues concerning colonisation and stolen land, racism, family violence, and how indigenous peoples throughout the South Pacific face further loss of land to big mining companies. Please show your opposition to Howards's racist attacks by joining the rally; bring banners and placards if you can but some will be provided. Organised by A Space Inside anarchists, visiting Australian students and Socialist Workers, for more information contact email.

  • Wellington - 12 noon to 2pm, rally and march from Midland Park, Lambton Quay, to Te Aro Park, Dixon Street
  • Rally and march in solidarity with the indigenous peoples of Australia's Northern Territory! Please show your support by joining the rally. For more information contact Mark email or tel 021 2333 424; a poster is available here.

  • Christchurch - 12 noon, Cathedral Square
  • Come and support our Aboriginal brothers and sisters as we join in the International Day of Action: Stop Aboriginal Genocide on Stolen Aboriginal Land. "Under the cynical guise of protecting indigenous children from sexual abuse, the Howard government announced on Thursday a 'national emergency plan' to take control of dozens of Aboriginal communities throughout the Northern Territory and impose virtual martial law conditions. Over coming weeks, police and troops will flood into as many as 60 towns and camps to enforce a series of draconian measures." For more information contact email.

  • Dunedin - 12 noon, Octagon
  • Tent Embassy, on the International Day of Action in solidarity with Aboriginal Communities - stand (and sit) in solidarity with Aboriginal Communities in the Northern Territory in opposition to the Australian Federal government's military invasion, land confiscation and continued genocide. "We support the rights of Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory and throughout Australia to control their land, determine their own lives and resolve issues within their communities on their terms. We are seeking to provide an open space where people can inform themselves on and discuss these issues, as well as the issues of Aboriginal and indigenous sovereignty generally. Information resources will be available for reading and taking away. There will also be opportunities to write, make and paint your opposition to the Howard government's actions"; and speakers including Metiria Turei. Organised by a group including members of Corso Dunedin, the Black Star Books collective, the Green Party and Food not Bombs.
