Letter to Guardian Weekly
26 February 2002
How honourable is it to launch a bombing campaign such as happened in Afghanistan, with the inevitable loss of civilians, on a country which has suffered 11 years of punishment under the sanctions regime for the crime of invading Kuwait.
|And what is honourable about destroying alleged sites of nuclear weapons production in Iraq, when the United States has the biggest stockpile of nuclear warheads in the world, also is known to maintain factories for the production of chemical weapons, and almost certainly has facilities for producing biological weapons.
The US may have been a reluctant warrior in the past, as your writer asserts, but it appears now that the President is determined to use his vast military might to try to resolve fanaticism and terrorist factions, instead of invoking international law and applying the expedient of massive humanitarian aid.
