Details of the Award and Criteria

Nominations for the 2000 Award are now being received and will close on October 31.

The Roger Award was set up in 1997 by GATT Watchdog, Corso and CAFCA (The Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa). Each year the transnational corporation judged to have operated in the worst manner in New Zealand over the past year is given the dubious honour of winning the award. Past winners have been Tranz Rail, Monsanto and Trans Alta.

Criteria:
The criteria for judging is: the transnational that has the most negative impact in each or all of the following fields - unemployment, monopoly, profiteering, abuse of workers/conditions, political interference, environmental damage, cultural imperialism, impact on tangata whenua, running an ideological crusade, impact on women, health and safety of workers and the public.

Nominations:
You can nominate the same transnational as last year as long as the nomination is about their misdeeds in 2000. Please send as much detail as you have, including press cuttings and reports, but you do not have to do all the research. Just quote sources if you can.

Nominations come from members of the public and are judged by a panel of four.

Judging:
A panel of judges (to be announced) will be given a shortlist of 8-9 nominations from which to make their decision. The winner(s) will be announced at an event in Wellington in early 2001. Last year's judges were Maxine Gay, President Trade Union Federation, Simon Collins, Editor City Voice, Moana Jackson, Director Nga Kaiwhakamarama I Nga Ture and Jane Kelsey, Professor of Law University of Auckland.

This year's Roger Award is being organised by CAFCA and GATT Watchdog and will be presented in Wellington in February 2001.
