According to its
vision statement, APEC (Asia Pacific Economic
Co-operation) seeks to achieve stability, security
& prosperity for its member nations. The emphasis
however has been on establishing a highly competitive
free market that benefits multi-national corporate
interests and is manipulated by financial
speculators.
APEC has lost its way. Asian
and Pacific co-operation needs to incorporate human
rights and ecological integrity while recognising
& supporting the need for regional economies
& communities within the global economy.
The conference will briefly
critique APEC’s misguided direction and impact
and develop positive models for people and
earth-centered development.
The conference immediately
precedes the APEC meeting of Heads of State.
