No. 29/30, May 2008
IN MEMORY OF STAN HEMSLEY
- Murray Horton
Stan Hemsley, who died in Christchurch in May 2007, aged
88, was a PSNA member throughout the 1990s and into the
early years of this century until he had to go into care.
He never went to the Philippines, indeed he never went
outside NZ (although he was a seaman and fisherman for
years in his youth, he only ever worked in domestic
waters) but Stan was an internationalist who always
attended any PSNA activities during the decade or so that
he was a member.
Of course, PSNA was only one of the myriad of groups to
which Stan devoted his considerable energy and was not
his top priority by a long shot. He was a dedicated
environmentalist and peace activist for many decades.
Among others he was an active member of both the Campaign
Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa and the Anti-Bases
Campaign (he was a regular at protests at the Waihopai
spybases in the 1980s and 90s). I wrote lengthy
obituaries of him for both Foreign Control Watchdog and
Peace Researcher. The Watchdog one (in number 115, August
2007) can be read online at
http://www.converge.org.nz/watchdog/15/10.htm and the PR
one (number 34, July 07) at
http://www.converge.org.nz/abc/pr34-142a.html. Stan was a
great old battler and campaigner of the kind who is
sorely missed.
DEATH IN THE FAMILY
PSNA expresses our deepest sympathies to Eileen Shewan, a
PSNA founder (Eileen was previously involved with
Philippines Solidarity Group Otautahi [Christchurch]),
our committee colleague for the first half of the 90s and
a long time Kapatiran writer, for the death of her
husband, Ian, who died in February 2007 in Christchurch,
aged 66.
