2002 AGM minutes &
CAFC/ABC organiser account 01/02

The 2002 CAFCA AGM was held at the Christchurch WEA on September 23. Approximately 20 members were present. Bill Rosenberg chaired. Apologies were accepted from Rod Donald, Maurice Ward, the Sisters of St Joseph, Ray Scott, Martin and Lois Griffiths, Christine Dann, Ann Rosenberg, Helen Kingston, David Zwartz, Bob Leonard, Gillian Southey and Denis O’Connor. A solidarity message was read from Don Ross of the Organisation for Marxist Unity. The 2001 Minutes were read by the secretary, Murray Horton, and accepted.

The 2001/02 accounts were presented by Liz Griffiths, the bookkeeper (these had been posted to all members with Watchdog 100, August 2002). She described them as being high volume but low value, and that CAFCA’s income is still heavily dependent on donations. She explained that Inland Revenue has said that it doesn’t require our accounts to be audited, that it is satisfied with them for tax purposes. But the committee had decided to continue having them audited, in the interests of accountability to members. The meeting accepted the accounts and thanked Liz Griffiths for her essential work as bookkeeper, and Bruce Finnerty for his work as the honorary auditor.

As Bob Leonard was absent (he had a clash of meetings), Murray Horton reported on the CAFCA/ABC Organiser Account, which pays him. The Account has risen somewhat, to just over $16,000 per year, the great bulk of which is used to pay Murray. But expenses had also risen, so the Account had dropped by $1,600 from the previous year. At any given time, the Account holds $3,000-$4,000 – the comparable figure used to be $6,000+. The proportion of income from regular pledgers accounts for 64% of the Account; 36% is from donations (this was unchanged from 2001). As of March 2002, there were 27 regular pledgers. Murray pointed out that the situation had improved since then – there had been a first ever direct mail appeal, which had brought in more donations and several more pledgers (there are now 30+).The meeting passed a vote of thanks for Bob Leonard.

Election of officers. Murray Horton was re-elected as secretary. The committee was re-elected - Bill Rosenberg, Dennis Small, John Ring, Reg Duder. Ray Scott resigned from the committee. Liz Griffiths is bookkeeper; Bruce Finnerty the honorary auditor.

Murray Horton presented his annual Organiser’s Report.

General business. There was a discussion of user charges and privatisation of essential services such as water and rubbish collection. Plus discussion on the "war on terror" and how CAFCA has now come full circle, as we were born out of the Vietnam War protest movement.

At the conclusion of business we screened the Australian documentary: "An Evergreen Island", about Bougainville.
