Coromandel farmers set up website to fight forestry TNC

- Murray Horton

Watchdog 101 (December 2002) reported on the battle of Coromandel dairy farmers, Jean and Paul Bibby, against Malaysian forestry transnational, Ernslaw One. The company has been given Overseas Investment Commission (OIC) permission to buy one of the dairy farms neighbouring the Bibbys and build a sawmill on it. For the details, see the November 2002 OIC decisions elsewhere in this issue.

Now Jean and Paul might be a couple of back block cow cockies but they know how to wage a thoroughly 21st Century campaign (Jean spent decades fighting mining transnationals on behalf of the highly successful Peninsula Watchdog). So they’ve set up a Website to publicise the negative environmental effects of the proposed sawmill. It’s well worth a visit. The address is www.weps.org.nz

You can contact the Whangapoua Environmental Protection Society at jbibby@paradise.net.nz They need all the help that they can get.
