New Greenpeace report slams
Malaysian forestry TNC

- Murray Horton

For more than a decade Watchdog has been chronicling the New Zealand activities of Malaysian forestry transnational corporation (TNC), Ernslaw One, and the appalling regional devastation wrought by its parent, Rimbunan Hijau, which has plundered the tropical rainforests of its home island, Borneo, plus those of its Melanesian neighbours, such as Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Most recently we have been following the struggle of our members, Jean and Paul Bibby, as they have campaigned against Ernslaw One’s proposal to build a processing plant amongst the dairy farms and pristine coastline of Whangapoua, on the Coromandel Peninsula. Greenpeace has recently published a report, complete with a chapter on Ernslaw One and including material from the Bibbys.

The whole thing is well worth a read and can be accessed online at http://www.greenpeace.org.nz/pdfs/RH_Forest_Report.pdf You need to have PDF Acrobat Reader and it is a big document (two megabytes). And you can contact the Whangapoua Environmental Protection Society at jbibby@paradise.net.nz Their Website is at www.weps.org.nz They need all the help that they can get.
