Foreign Control Watchdog was registered as an incorporated society in 1997, for the sole purpose of publishing Watchdog. It was separate from the Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa Incorporated, had its own members, bank account, annual general meeting and annual accounts. The law governing incorporated societies was changed in 2022 (they had operated under a 1908 Act).

Every one of them in NZ has to update their rules and re-register with the Companies Office by April 2026. CAFCA is going through that process. It was decided not to do likewise with Watchdog Inc. Accordingly, it was wound up in 2024, in line with its rules, and after 27 years of existence. The Watchdog bank account has been closed. This means that, as of now, CAFCA is the publisher of Watchdog.
