Notices "A BEGINNER'S
GUIDE TO FOREIGN CONTROL" NOW ON THE WEB For the past several years, Murray Horton has used his "A Beginner's Guide to Foreign Control" as the basis for speeches and papers delivered in Christchurch, and around the country. He makes sure that it is regularly updated. But at 50 pages it's far too long for us to consider publishing. That's why we have decided to make copies available to members who request them. It covers: the global context; foreign control in Aotearoa; myths about foreign control; future trends; "free" trade; WTO/MAI/APEC; and what we can do about it. You can order it from CAFCA. Enclose $10 to cover copying and postage. Or you can now access it on our Website http://canterbury.cyberplace.org.nz/community/CAFCA CHEQUES: Please Make Them Out CorrectlyPlease ensure that your cheques, for membership, donations, purchases, etc, are made out to CAFCA, and nobody else. If you wish to make a donation towards Murray Horton's pay, then make your cheque out to the CAFCA/ABC Organiser Account (which is a separate account). CAFCA MEMBERSHIP FEE INCREASEDNow $20; New $15 Unwaged Rate At the 1999 CAFCA Annual General Meeting there was a motion to increase annual membership fees by $5 (to $20 for ordinary members; and $30 for institutional and overseas members), to come into effect from the 2000/01 membership year. This was amended from the floor to include a $15 unwaged rate for ordinary members. The amended motion was carried unanimously. This was deemed necessary because of CAFCAs increased expenses over recent years. We realise that a $5 increase will hurt some of our members, so thats why the new $15 unwaged rate has been introduced. Dont worry, we wont operate a means test - well leave it up to you to decide if youre waged or unwaged. This new rate starts now for existing members, as we bill you for your 2000/01 annual membership. For new members, it has applied since the beginning of the year. WATCHDOG IS NOW ON THE WEBDue to popular demand, and with the generous help of Converge which provides free web facilities to worthy organisations, Foreign Control Watchdog now has its own web site at http://www.converge.org.nz/watchdog Every member of the Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa receives a copy of each issue of Foreign Control Watchdog. Thanks to Greg Waite for his hard work setting up and running the site. Greg is living proof of the changes in the way things are published. A decade ago, he used to, singlehandedly, print Watchdog on an old press in a Christchurch garage. Now he is our Webmaster, and he doesnt even live in New Zealand. The site already has Watchdog 93 (April 2000) and number 92 (December 99). This issue, and subsequent ones, will join them. It's a no frills site - all text, no illustrations. What you see is how it goes to layout (complete with the odd layout instruction), not as it finally appears in Watchdog. We have neither the time, nor the expertise to make it look better. Maybe in the future. Overseas Investment Commission decisions will not go there because they are already available on CAFCA's web site at http://canterbury.cyberplace.org.nz/community/CAFCA PACIFIC WORLD: SUBSCRIBE Published since 1986 by the Pacific Institute of Resource Management (PIRM), Pacific World takes a holistic view covering what is happening locally in New Zealand and also world developments on social and environmental concerns. Issues covered regularly are: climate change, genetic engineering, globalisation, poverty, economics, agriculture, biodiversity. Next issue is September 2000. Basically, we ask you for your annual membership, and thats it, apart from appeals for any special campaigns or activities that we might be running. However, this time we do have come to you, cap in hand, and ask you for increased donations, for our actual running costs. Theres no crisis yet. But there could well be in the future, as our expenses have exceeded our regular income for some time. We have increased our (waged) membership fee to $20 per year, but that, in itself, will not bring in enough. Its no secret what our increased expenses have been. In late 1999, we bought a brand new computer its the key piece of our equipment. Everything, including this Watchdog, is produced on it. Weve been more active lately in campaigning and lobbying the 2000 launch of our campaign to seize the Suhartos NZ assets involved paying for Indonesian expert, George Aditjondro, to be flown from Sydney to Auckland, and Murray Horton to be flown from Christchurch. Weve paid for Bill Rosenberg to fly to Wellington to brief the Alliance caucus. These are some examples of unusual expenses. Our regular income has noticeably dropped in recent times. We have a number of theories on why that is so: people are facing hard times (that is a given); people are reassured by the change of Government and dont feel the same need to support a group such as CAFCA (all we can do is refer you to the cover story in this issue, for an analysis of how little things have changed under the new Government); and, finally, the advent of e-mail means that the great bulk of our mail comes that way now (its not uncommon for there to be no mail for us for days on end at our PO Box that used to be extremely rare) and so we dont get good old letters with donations enclosed. All we can say is, that if you value the work we do, please donate generously. Make cheques to CAFCA, Box 2258, Christchurch, NZ. AND REMEMBER US IN YOUR WILLS This is something weve never suggested before but its commonplace in other groups. One simple way for members and supporters to donate to CAFCA is to remember us in your will. That way you can probably guarantee that youll get one of Watchdogs famous obituaries.
