Peace Researcher is the journal of the Anti-Bases Campaign and has been regularly published since 1983.  The editor is Murray Horton; the layout artist is Becky Horton.   Our journal covers a range of peace issues with emphasis on foreign military bases and intelligence topics. Contributed articles will be considered for publication based on subject matter and space requirements. We are particularly interested in reports of original research on peace topics in Aotearoa and the wider region of Australasia and the Pacific.

Peace Researcher is the journal of record on:

  • Foreign bases – the US Air Force military base at Christchurch Airport; and the "New Zealand" spybases at Waihopai and Tangimoana (which are, effectively, American Intelligence bases). Our work is even more vital now that New Zealand is part of the global "War On Terror", the war in Afghanistan and the illegal American-led occupation of Iraq, wars in which these bases are actively involved.

  • Intelligence agencies (such as the Security Intelligence Service and Government Communications Security Bureau) and Intelligence issues, both nationally and globally. For example, we’ve campaigned on the whole raft of laws that give NZ Intelligence agencies greater powers and curtail basic civil liberties.

  • Cases such as that of Aziz Choudry and David Small, the two Christchurch men at the centre of the bungled break in at Choudry’s home by agents of the Security Intelligence Service. We followed that story for years, right through the various successful court cases that arose from it. More recently, we have been following the Zaoui case with its many revelations of the bungling machinations of the SIS and other agencies.

  • International stories. For instance, for more than seven years, we have followed the rampages of mercenaries from Africa to Papua New Guinea to today’s Iraq. We regularly report on NZ Big Brother’s much bigger brothers in several countries. We analyse the new geopolitical realities in vital regions of the world such as Australia, the Asia Pacific and Central Asia. We have specialised in reporting on anti-bases struggles in places as varied as Okinawa, Britain and Australia.

Nobody else is doing this work, nor are you likely to read about these subjects in other publications. So, if you want to stay informed on these military and Intelligence issues, Peace Researcher is the publication for you. We are recognised as experts in this field. Don’t just take our word for it – both the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade have been subscribing for years!
