How Covenants Work

An Open Space Covenant is a legal agreement between the landowner and the National Trust.

The land and what is on it is still the property of the landowner, but the National Trust acts as Trustee to ensure the special character of the land remains.

The area to be protected is fenced off and surveyed. The covenant area, as surveyed,
is registered on the title of the land. This covenant agreement holds for the present and
any future owner of that property.

The National Trust can assist with the cost of putting an
Open Space Covenant in place. Often they will cover the
cost of the registration of the covenant on the title and the survey of the area. The Trust may also offer up to 50% financial assistance towards any fencing costs that may be necessary to secure the area.
