What's Been Happening ?

Envirosouth staff member, Nick Rosewarne, organises the work programme at O'Neill Block A. Here he stands beside an information panel explaining the work going on in the area.
This will be very useful when this forest remnant is visited by the local schools and community groups.

Kowhai Reach
This meandering stretch of the Winton Stream at Kuana is protected by covenants with 5 neighbouring farmers and the Southland District Council. The banks are lined with Kowhai - a real landscape feature. In 2000 the Limehills School became involved in a revegetation programme to help ensure the life of Kowhai Reach.

Kowhai Reach Happenings:

Wednesday, 13th March - meeting of covenantors to discuss managment issues for the coming year. The Limehills School revegetation area was inspected. Growth in the threatened plants, Melicytus and Olearia, was exceptional. Pittosporum and kowhai also doing well. Planned to hold Winter Field Day at this site - Thursday, 25th July.

Monday & Tuesday, 11th & 12th June 2001- weed control undertaken by Taskforce Green, and plantings started at the north end. Read on.

Opposite is the area planted out on Arbor Day 2000. Watch this space to see an update of what it looks like two years on !! Arbor Day plantings by the Limehills School this year will focus on filling in the gaps.

YMCA Cons Corp students load holly on to the trailer for removal. Branches left on the ground can root again.

Kew Bush
The Southland District Health Board own this lovely forest covenant area behind Kew Hospital. It is wonderful to have this bush walk made freely open for use, and the people who use this area will have seen the work going on there. The YMCA Conservation Corps have been removing holly, which was taking over, and will soon start work on elderberry and ivy. The Invercargill South Lions Club have begun weed clearance and revegetation work along the north side, as well as maintaining the track.
