Indigenous Peoples' Rights

10 August 1999

For those of you with an interest in indigenous peoples' rights - check out the goverments who are holding up progress on the UN Declaration ...

Radio Australia - 10 August 99 - 3.17pm Indigenous peoples press UN to recognize their rights

Representatives of 300 million indigenous peoples in 70 countries have called on the United Nations to recognize their rights to land and self-determination.

A non-binding U-N declaration on rights of indigenous people has NOT been adopted despite years of discussion.

President of the American Indian Law Alliance, Tonya Frichner, says progress is very slow and help is needed to push the process forward.

She says the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are among the states that are slowing talks down.

Some five-thousand indigenous groups are spread out across five continents from the Arctic circle to the South Pacific.
