East Timor petition - UNHCHR
To Mary Robinson, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Regarding East Timor
(1) We strongly protest the United Nations' lack of protection for the people of East Timor, allowing the Indonesian military and its agents to: · murder thousands of East Timorese since the September 4th announcement of results of the UN- mandated ballot; · force hundreds of thousands of East Timorese into West Timor; · transport East Timorese from West Timor to other parts of Indonesia.
(2) We welcome and applaud your intention to establish a tribunal to investigate crimes committed in East Timor.
(3) Further, we ask that you obtain a commitment from the United Nations to please guarantee the following:-
(i) That all East Timorese people evacuated into West Timor and taken to other parts of Indonesia be repatriated back to East Timor;
(ii) That until this repatriation can take place, the human rights and humanitarian needs of East Timorese people be secured in all the areas to which they have been forcibly deported.
