13 to 22 February was the International Week of Action Against War - 13 February was the 12th anniversary of the deliberate bombing of the Amariyah Bomb Shelter, Baghdad, which killed hundreds of civilians sheltering there. Saturday, 15 February was an International Day of Action to Stop the War on the People of Iraq.

Whangarei

Saturday, 15 February - Whangarei Peace Rally and March - from 10am to 1pm, based around the Cameron Street Mall, with street theatre, music, and ideas on calling for the NZ government to be more upfront about opposing the war.     Saturday, 15 February - join the silent vigil, then march up Pollen St to the War Memorial Hall, Mary Street; where there will be car-share available to travel to Auckland for the rally there. For more info contact Harry tel (07) 868 6641.

  • In Thames, our regular Saturday Morning Silent Vigil for Peace was followed by a march of about 100 people to the grounds of the local War Memorial Hall, where we heard speeches from Jeanette Fitzsimons and Martin Hughes, before some of us left for Auckland to join the Auckland March. We think that 100 people out of a total population of around 6000 was a good turnout.

    Gisborne

    Saturday, 15 February - Turanga/Gisborne March for Peace, gather at 11am, corner of Disraeli St and Gladstone Rd, walk to Wi Pere memorial. For more information contact Catherine Delahunty tel (06) 868 1905 or email.

  • On Feb 15 about 160 people marched down the main street of Gisborne with a wide range of placards opposing the US led war on Iraq and singing 'Give Peace A Chance'. The march included tangata whenua, church groups, Green Party and many local families. The rally afterwards was addressed by a range of people from visiting Americans who oppose the war, to tangata whenua speaking of the intergenerational damage of war on the Maori people.

  • On Monday 17th Green MP Keith Locke spoke to a public meeting on the important role we could take as a peace making nation and the lack of justification for an attack on Iraq.


  • Napier

  • So many people came on the march that there was no way they could all fit into the original rally venue, Midland Park. Parliament being the only central city place large enough for a crowd of that size to gather, the march ended up there instead. Although many people left as the march ended rather than staying on for the speakers, the whole of parliament grounds was full of people for the rally!   • Photo from the 30-strong rally in Westport (population 3000). Many passers-by signed a letter to the NZ government asking it to press for more diplomatic effort to stop the invasion of Iraq. Lots of toots and thumbs up from motorists, very little anti-sentiment; and even our right-wing mayor opposes war without UN support!


  • Greymouth

    Saturday, 15 February - inaugural meeting of West Coast Peace Group - suggested aims of the Peace Group are to promote discussion on issues affecting peace; to educate the wider community on these issues; to link with other peace groups in New Zealand and internationally; to witness to changes in society necessary for a peaceful future by holding public activities in the local region, and to discuss the current situation in the Middle East.
