"We want socialism to be a reality in New Zealand but we will never achieve our aims while the Labour Party accepts the idea of piecemeal changes… Instead of creating real change however, we set about trying to patch a system we did not believe in, clinging to the centre of the road and trying to appease vested interests.

"While fraternal parties in Europe launched a frontal atack on multinational corporations, we moved slowly and cautiously. Multinationals threaten our economic and political sovereignty and social wellbeing. They can suddenly transfer huge productive investments out of a country, causing unemployment and economic disruption. We must look also to the alternatives of community trust and cooperative ownership. Trustee savings banks, for example, have provided good service to our community and retained the wealth produced by New Zealanders in New Zealand. Why tolerate profiteering and the draining of resources from this country by foreign financial institutions?"…
