There are 101 covenants in Southland, protecting 2,024 ha (as at March 2003)
Covenant sizes range from .4ha in Otatara to 214ha in the Hokonui Hills

Most of the covenants protect forest remnants, however there are also wetland/peatland, tussock grassland and riparian areas protected as well.
