~ Proposal to form a National Human Rights Network : first meeting to discuss this proposal, 20 Sept, at the Race relations Office, 3 Floor, Norwich Building (cnr Queen St and Durham St West), Auckland. 5-30pm nibbles and drinks, 6pm meeting. The paanui for this meeting states it is from ‘an organising group of representatives from a range of NGOs’ but none are named in the background material. It also states that a number of official agencies have indicated support for a national human rights network - including MFAT, the Human Rights Commission, and Te Puni Kokiri. “Each of these sees benefits in having a mechanism for consultation on human rights matters.

~ FROM 29 SEPTEMBER TO 1 OCTOBER - NZ Council of Social Services will be holding seminars around the country to raise awareness of housing issues facing low income households. Speakers At Each of the Venues Will Include: 1. A NZCCSS representative on the impact of and alternatives to current housing policy in NZ; 2. ~ TUES, 14 Sept - Hear Rubina Jamil (Pakistani activist) who will be visiting New Zealand as part of her role as a co-ordinator of Asia Pacific Workers Solidarity Links. She has requested the opportunity to talk to women’s groups and unions. Two meetings have been set up for this: 11.15 am to 12.30 pm, a meeting of women’s organisations will be held at St Johns Church Hall, Cnr Dixon and Willis Sts; 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm - a meeting of trade union activists will be held at The Service and Food Workers Union, BBQ Factory, Ngauranga Gorge.
