EILEEN SHEWAN RESIGNS – AGAIN
- Murray Horton

Way back in Kapatiran 6 (September 1995), under the headline “Eileen Shewan Resigns”, we reported: “We’re sad to announce that Eileen Shewan has resigned from the PSNA Committee. She has been a leading worker for Philippines solidarity since visiting there in 1990. She got into it via active involvement in the now defunct Catholic Commission for Justice, Peace and Development…Like so many other CCJPD activists, she was inspired into Philippines solidarity work by the late Father John Curnow. Eileen was actively involved in, firstly the Philippines Solidarity Group Otautahi (Christchurch), and then the national network when Christchurch took on that role, in 1993. Once Kapatiran was established as PSNA’s new newsletter, Eileen became a regular writer, specialising in women’s issues…. The reason Eileen left us is simply that she is too busy and something had to give. Unfortunately it was PSNA… But she is not entirely lost to PSNA – she is going to continue writing for Kapatiran…”.

And write she did. For the next seven years, Eileen’s lengthy articles, under the generic heading, “Voices Of Women And Children”, were a feature of every issue of Kapatiran. They had a refreshing feminist perspective and provided a voice for the most voiceless people of the Philippines. By 2002 she had too many other things on in her life to be able to carry on writing for us. But she was so productive that one of her articles was so lengthy and detailed that we were able to publish it over two issues. But, alas, by 2003, there was no more and we do now have to farewell Eileen, for the second time. Unfortunately nobody is in a position to take over her “beat” for Kapatiran, mores the pity. It is our loss.

Thanks, Eileen, for all your many years of Philippines solidarity work, firstly as an activist at the local and national level and then many years as a Kapatiran writer. You’ve done us proud.
